new yorkers are nice

at least so far. i arrived in the big apple today with my mom and fell in love at first sight. something about the raw imperfection drew me to it. i experienced my first cab ride - compliments of Hashimi Sayed - the driver who kept us safe from airport to hotel. i feel like i entered a giant movie set. i didn't realize how many tv shows and movies take place in New York.

anyways - the point of this whole thing was to tell my little story of how nice new yorkers are - or have been, to me, tonight. My mom and i were hanging out in the hotel room, watching Law & Order (as usual) and even though it was about 945pm new york time, that means it was about 645pm california time, so needless to say neither of us were tired. and the fact that it was about our dinner time, i became extremely hungry. so. i decided to go to the starbucks located inside the hotel, and get some fresh fruit or a sandwich or something to sustain me. i donned the pea coat and beanie, in attempt to blend in, and rode the elevator from 31 to Lobby.

Come to find out, the Hilton Starbucks was closed, but a Starbucks across the street was open "late". so i gathered up the courage to venture out into the big bad city on my own and crossed the street.

as i walked in, a homeless lady, clutching an empty iced coffee, warbled out "be careful, the lights are on!" - or something similar. i walked up to the counter, eyeing the sandwiches and bottled drinks. a worker walked out to restock some mugs, so i asked him what time they closed. he responded,

"Well, we're actually closed now, but . . . " (glance at sandwiches) "go ahead and take anything you want, for free."
I laughed, because...who does that? I asked him if he was kidding.
He said "No. Go ahead, take anything you want."
So i did. i got a huge bagful of free stuff from starbucks and it felt like halloween in february.
i couldn't help but smiling the entire way back.
i most definitely looked like an out-of-towner.

that was longer than intended. oh well. time to go to sleepy.
